The Best Revenge

by Andrew Grey

Mark had Amy sign the bill of sale as well, figuring if Roger

tried to make a fuss they'd be covered. Within two hours, the

truck was loaded, the house locked, and they were heading

down the walk.

Mark hugged Amy and asked if she and John would like to

join them for a drink at the apartment. They gladly accepted.

Mark and Tyler stopped briefly to deposit Tyler's check. At the

store, the four of them unloaded the truck in record time. The

back room of the store was getting quite full, so many of the

boxes of smaller items were neatly stacked against one wall

of the studio. The paintings were taken up to the apartment.

Once everything was unloaded, Amy wandered into Mark's

studio. When Amy saw the painting of her mother, she

started to cry. "Marky, it's beautiful. When did you do that?"

Mark took her in his arms and started to cry as well. They just

held each other, tears streaming down their faces. They made

little effort to compose themselves, both letting their grief

flow.

Mark dried his tears. "Last night and this morning. I got

inspired and was up most of the night working on it." Mark

put the painting on the easel and ushered Amy out of the

studio. He had no intention of showing her the painting of

Roger.

The four of them headed upstairs and Tyler got everyone

something to drink. The conversation was light but

companionable, not the usual type of after-funeral

conversation. There was no reminiscing about the good times

with their mom, no telling of stories. They all knew that would

be too painful, especially for Mark.
